The St. John's University Track Club was founded in the fall of 2012, then under the name of "St. John's Running Club," by graduate student, Richard Dolan. Ever since the university had dropped its Men's D1 Track and Field program in 2002, a gaping hole had existed on campus where competitive running was concerned. The Track Club attempted to fill this void, as well as to provide running opportunities to all those students -- men and women -- that did not wish to compete at the Division 1 level.
During the first three years of its existence, the club remained small, and competitions were infrequent. But enthusiasm for the club never died. At the close of the spring 2015 semester, members of the club once again realized its potential to become a top-flight intercollegiate running program -- given the size of the university and the resources available -- and held a meeting to discuss how to turn this idea into a reality. Under the leadership of John Kuehn ('16), Keith Mumolo ('16), John Fullam ('18), and CJ Martin ('18), the first constitution of the club was drafted, and the foundation was laid for the club to be successful for years to come. In the fall of 2015, with its new constitution hot off the press, the club attracted over 50 new members and participated in more competitions then in the previous three years combined! Also of note: October 24th, 2015 marked the first meeting between the SJU Track Club and the Hofstra Running Club; this inaugural dual meet will forever be remembered as the beginning of their storied rivalry. |
